Santa Rosa Island

Santa Rosa Island
Off the coast of California there are the Channel Islands and you can backpack and camp. Santa Cruz island offers camping and is one of the largest islands but with pit toilets and no water and a long hike to the camp. Anacapa island has no water and no toilets and a huge amount of stairs and hiking to get to the top. Since I travel with my 11 year old son and we are not Olympic athletes I chose Santa Rosa island as our first backpacking trip together. There are 15 campsites at the Cherry Canyon campground with large wooden wind barriers because it does get windy. You can book the campsites for $15USD a night at recreation.gov. A company called Island Packers www.islandpackers.com out of Ventura Harbor has a boat that takes you out to the island and along the way you see dolphins and the occasional whale it costs about $120USD round trip per person. The boat has meals on board to buy from their galley. We were met by the National Park Service Ranger at the docks and we backpacked 1.3 miles to the cherry Canyon campsite which is mostly a flat hike and is wagon friendly if you have one of those collapsible wagons you can take on the boat. There was a food box built into our Wooden barrier that was large enough to put all of our food and then some into it. You have to be careful because the island fox lives on the island and will jump right on your table and steal your food. We brought our fishing poles and you need to have a fishing license to fish there and we were able to fish off the pier and I did some surf fishing off the beach. The beach was so beautiful with soft white sands and unlike any beach on the mainland. We were the only two people on the beach. The surf and current were a little rough so if you do not have fins there are no lifeguards. When we were leaving I did see a couple of New Zealanders bringing spearfishing gear in. We also just had a great time playing in the waves on the beach and hunting for sand crabs. At night we ate mountain house www.mountainhouse.com meals we liked the chicken Teriyaki and Beef Stew meals and had the freeze dried ice cream sandwiches and hot cocoa that my son loved as dessert. He was so hungry after hiking and playing at the beach that he loved everything we ate. It was a great bonding experience with my son. The bathrooms were really nice. We were in campsite two right next to the water source. I'll post more advetures soon. I don't know why my food box picture came out upside down.
